Visiting a coin shop

A few notes before you walk into Paragon Numismatics in Mequon, WI. These rotate daily. They are general collector etiquette from CDXList — not this shop’s house rules. When something is unclear, ask the person at the counter.

1. 01

   Bullion and collector coins are different conversations

   Melt moves with the market. A key date does not. Say what you think you have, then let them look. Mixing “it’s old so it must be rare” with a junk-silver bag slows everyone down. Sort in your mind: weight versus date.

   Do not clean the coins

   Polish, dip, baking soda, and a toothbrush lower the value of most collectible coins. Leave dirt and toning alone. If you already cleaned something, say so. A dealer would rather hear the truth than discover it under a lamp.

   Never step behind the counter

   That side of the glass is staff only — even if you “just want to show them something in better light.” Hand the coins across. Wait to be invited if they have a viewing area. Crossing the rail uninvited is how visits end early.

4. 04

   Call ahead with a large collection or an estate

   A suitcase is not a walk-in impulse. Tell them roughly what you have and when you can come. They may want a second set of hands or a block of time. That is how you get a fair look instead of a glance between other customers.

5. 05

   Insurance and probate need different paperwork

   If a lawyer, an executor, or an insurer sent you, say so. Bring what papers you have. The shop may not be the appraiser you need, and they will tell you. That honesty is useful. It is better than leaving with the wrong kind of number.
