Collector notes

Visiting a coin shop

A few notes before you walk into Pawn Express in Silver Spring, MD. These rotate daily. They are general collector etiquette from CDXList — not this shop’s house rules. When something is unclear, ask the person at the counter.

  1. Bring coins in a way they can actually look at them

Trays, albums, and labeled bags beat a torn grocery sack. Do not pour coins onto glass. Hand them a box they can work through. Dirt, food, and loose batteries in the same tin make a poor first impression and a slower look.

  2. Be present when it is your turn

Take the call outside. Pull the earbuds. The dealer is about to look at your coins or pull something you asked for. A face-to-face minute is worth more than a half-distracted twenty. If you need to text a spouse about a number, say so and step aside.

  3. Cash is still common. That is normal.

Coin and bullion shops have worked in cash for a long time. It is not shady by itself. Count together at the counter. Do not count a stack in the parking lot with the door open. If you are uncomfortable carrying cash, say so and ask what else they can do.

  4. Ask before you touch anything in the case

The dealer will hand you a coin or put it on a pad. Do not reach into a tray or slide a slab toward yourself. Handle coins by the edges if they are raw. If you drop something, say so immediately.

  5. They may weigh, look up, or photograph

That is how a careful shop works. It is not stalling. Stay with your coins. If they need a minute in the back, that is their process. Ask if you are unsure what is happening. Curiosity is fine. Suspicion as a default is not.
